ACOUSTIC COMFORT

Sustainability

Sustainability is a key priority at Gabriel, and we are deeply committed to creating sustainable products without endangering the environment and the lives of future generations. Our products are manufactured with respect not only for the environment but also for user health and safety and aim to contribute to the creation of healthy indoor spaces.

Sustainable business practices – Gabriel Code of Conduct

At Gabriel sustainability is, however, not only about our products. It is also about how we do business in general. Consequently, we are uncompromising when it comes to ethical business conduct, and we always treat customers, suppliers, employees, communities and animals with decency and integrity. See Gabriel’s Code of Conduct for further information.

Improving our performance

Throughout our organisation and across products and business areas, we continuously take new steps to further strengthen our sustainable performance. We continuously strive to implement new sustainable materials and technologies to further reduce our environmental footprint.

Circular economy

Circular economy is an important focus area at Gabriel, and we design durable products with a long service life.
We always carefully consider the environmental impact of all product life cycle phases.

Our circular approach

Design & sourcing

The creation of circular products begins in the design and sourcing phase, where crucial decisions are made about raw materials that define the product’s lifespan and environmental profile.

Material selection

We work hard to ensure that raw materials and components meet our strict quality and environmental requirements. Gabriel requirements exceed applicable laws and regulations, reflect market demands as well as the demands of international labelling systems such as STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®, EU Ecolabel and Cradle to Cradle Certified®.

Sustainable materials – wool & recycled polyester

We use sustainable natural fibres, polyester and recycled polyester for our fabrics. With its unique functional and aesthetic properties wool is our preferred natural fibre. It offers superior comfort and exceptional durability and keeps its attractive appearance over time. The high-quality wool for Gabriel fabrics comes from New Zealand sheep that are given optimal care.

Our preferred man-made fibre is polyester. Polyester is extremely versatile, durable and offers superior stretch and upholstery properties. To strengthen our sustainable performance, we continue to increase our use of recycled polyester. Recycled polyester offers the same technical and aesthetic performance as virgin polyester but has a smaller impact on the environment.

Responsible production

In accordance with ISO 14001 we have taken significant steps to reduce the negative environmental impact of our production. We continuously strive to conserve energy, cut emissions of air pollutants, reduce waste water and minimise our use of virgin raw materials.

Recycling

Gabriel recycles waste from other industries and transforms it into new products. Since we began using recycled materials in the beginning of the 90’s, our selection of post-consumer recycled polyester fabrics has grown significantly. We primarily use recycled polyester made from used plastic bottles.

Explore our collection of recycled polyester fabrics here.

All Gabriel’s pure wool, wool/polyamide blends and pure polyester fabrics are 100% recyclable through various recycling mechanisms and can be used to make new fabrics or other products. As the fabrics are recyclable, Gabriel encourages furniture designers and producers to design and manufacture the furniture for easy disassembly, so the recyclable materials can continue in the loop. Wool is a natural material and due to Gabriel’s use of safe and environmentally friendly chemicals, all Gabriel’s 100% wool fabrics are also biodegradable (under controlled conditions in compliance with national restrictions).

Labels for safe and eco-friendly products

Gabriel offers the largest selection of eco-labelled products on the market and adheres to the regulatory standards of several environmental and consumer safety labelling programs. The labels offer our customers a documented and objective guarantee of our products’ environmental credentials and make it easier for you to make sustainable choices. Please follow the links for further information: Eu Ecolabel, STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®, Cradle to Cradle Certified® and FSC®.

Responsible supply chain management

Gabriel maintains the highest standards of ethical conduct, and we expect no less from our supply chain partners. Consequently, we choose partners and suppliers with great care and aspire to work only with business partners, who share our vision and commitment to sustainability.

Our Supplier Code of Conduct
Our Supplier Code of Conduct sets standards for the way we do business and incorporates the internationally accepted UN practices and standards. It covers our entire supply chain and includes topics such as animal welfare, anti-corruption, and anti-bribery. The Code of Conduct endorses the principles specified in the UN Global Compact.

Renewable energy

Gabriel sources 100% renewable electricity from diverse renewable sources in Scandinavia. A third of renewable energy consumed by Gabriel is sourced from Danish wind farms, a third from Danish biomass and the rest from Norwegian hydropower. The carbon neutrality encompasses all Gabriel companies as well as our part owned dye works ScanDye. Gabriel complies with the GHG protocol, which is the world’s most widely used greenhouse gas accounting standards and is in compliance with the quality criteria set by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol in the latest Scope 2 guidance document. Gabriel compensates for use of gas and fuel in owned facilities and vehicles by supporting the Beluguppa wind farm project in India. Rapid population growth and industrialization are leading to increased energy demand, which is being met by using fossil sources and that causes greenhouse gas emissions as well as pollution of the environment. The Beluguppa wind farm project’s purpose is to contribute to the conversion of the region’s energy supply scheme into a sustainable, environmentally friendly and climate-friendly one. The project also supports the long-term socioeconomic development of the region. Learn more about the project.
